WILLIAM (BILL) HOUGH SR.

Founder & Senior Executive

After working for Anthony Crane for 16 years all over the U.S and overseas with crane operating, inspecting and consulting, Bill had well-rounded expertise in the industry and decided he could do this on his own. He retired from Anthony’s at the age of 59 and started Crawford Custom Consulting in 2002.  Crawford Custom Consulting name came about because of the county name the headquarters resides and the desire to be versatile with service offerings within the industry.

WILLIAM (BILLY) HOUGH JR.

President

Billy started operating cranes in the late 70’s on a Michigan lattice boom truck crane with manual I beam outriggers, he graduated from high school in 1981 and worked for his dad, founder of Crawford Custom Bill Hough, and other local construction and sign companies operating heavy equipment. Billy went on to start his own sign company with a very small boom truck and merged with a larger sign company located in Jamestown, NY. Unfortunately during the early 90’s the economy tanked, advertising was one of the first things deemed non-essential and Billy needed a job, his Dad was there to help again and Billy received a position with Anthony Crane in Beaumont, TX working as an equipment coordinator and eventually being promoted to a branch manager in Philadelphia, PA. After Mr. Anthony sold the business to investment bankers, Billy realized he didn’t necessarily agree with the national corporate mentality and went to work for several large companies in the North East working various positions before helping his Dad start Crawford Custom Consulting, Inc.

In addition to Crawford Custom, Billy and his sons, Ryan and Steven, own Hough Logistics, LLC which specializes in large power transformer logistics internationally. Billy’s former relationship with HLI Rail & Rigging, LLC has taken him to eight countries around the world and the privilege of operating the newest 20 axle Schnabel car in North America.

When he’s not traveling around the country inspecting or training operators or supervising large rigging projects, Billy is an avid classic car collector and enjoys restoring classic automobiles along with attending the occasional car show.

BRIAN HOUGH

CEO & Vice President

Brian graduated High School in 1989. He joined the Operating Engineers union in 1991, then started as a crane oiler at Hawk Crane (Mercer, PA), when Anthony Crane bought Hawk Crane shortly after Brian transitioned to an operator. During this transition to an operator, he traveled to NJ to pick up a brand new 110t Liebherr and drove it back to Mercer where he spent a week with technicians from Liebherr learning everything about the new crane. Brian ran this crane for several years in the crane rental industry, including work on some movie sets until he took the position of night shift dispatcher at the Hess Refinery in St Croix for 6 weeks. Once he left St Croix, Brian moved his family to Baltimore, MD as a dispatcher for a new company that was purchased by Maxim Crane (Formerly Anthony Crane).

Several years later Brian left Maxim Crane to work for AmQuip Crane in Bensalem, PA as a dispatcher. They transferred him to Carteret, NJ as a branch manager. After a short time with AmQuip, he moved back to Meadville and spent some time operating lattice boom cranes for a local steel erection company until the call came from a former colleague to return to work with the Anthony Crane team (different then Maxim now). Brian moved to Pittsburgh and worked as a dispatcher for their trucking department while helping to implement the new crane rental division. He was transferred to Pompano Beach, FL to run the dispatch there.

In 1996, Brain moved back to PA to help his father, William (Bill) Hough, start a crane rental company out of the Crawford Custom Office. Although this was not a CCC company, his father was heavily involved in getting the new company (ITC Crane) started. Brian was the first and only operator for a while operating everything from a boom truck to eventually a 175t Grove. In 2010, Brian decided to make the move to go full time with Crawford Custom as the acting COO and helped to grow the business. This is when Crawford Custom really moved heavily into the CCO testing, including many remote trainings.

FUN FACT:  Brian told his wife when he was going to quit running crane for ITC and going to work for his dad, he would be working close to home and would be home every night. Unfortunately, this would turn out to be a lie as the first 6 months with CCC, Brian was out of town for more the 3 months of that.

In 2016 Brian was able to travel to China with his brother Bill to inspect a new crane. This eventually led him to Con-Expo in Las Vegas to inspect the same cranes once they reached the US. He’s traveled to many states while at CCC as well as a continued involvement in many different areas of NCCCO including the newest of being on the 2020 Telehandler Task Force.

MATT LATTA

Business Logistics

Matt Latta, a Penn State University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, started with Crawford Custom Consulting on January 1, 2020. Matt brings with him engineering, business, and customer support and sales experience. Throughout college and upon graduation Matt was employed in the Oil & Gas Industry and was a co-designer of an industry leading automated, pressure relief valve system for Frac operations.

During the market downturn of the Oil & Gas industry in late 2015, Matt was hired as a Production Manager for a steel slitting company in Hermitage, PA and quickly transitioned into the Plant Manager role. As the Oil & Gas market continued to rebound, the business that Matt was once a part of was quickly building a reputation and becoming recognized in the industry. He would return to the business in early 2018 as the Engineering Manager and transitioning into the role of Supply Chain Manager. After the sale of the majority share of the company in late 2019 and many of the operations moving to Texas, Matt decided that it was best for his career to transition out of the company and take on the opportunity here at Crawford Custom Consulting.

Fun fact: 2021 will be the 10th year of Crawford Custom sponsoring the dirt late model Matt Latta from Latta Brothers Racing.  2020 Raceway 7 track champion.  When you visit our Meadville facility you will see prior year memorabilia.

Matt is also a volunteer firefighter at the Conneaut Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

ROB MADISON

Instructor & Inspector

Robs interest in heavy equipment mechanics, started in high school. Friends of his owned a trucking company in New York and it sparked an interest, so he graduated in 1992 from Rosedale Technical Institute. Rob’s first job took him to Pittsburgh & Erie Diesel Institute as a heavy truck mechanic. Erie Diesel is where he started his training experience in transportation training.  Rob formed a company with his friend, Regis Scholl, called Transport Tech in Pittsburgh, which was formerly called Lawrence County Truck Training Center.  After a year they were able to open satellite facilities; Butler location (his grandest experience with rigging), Erie location, and Hazen location.

Sadly, in the Spring of 2012, Regis passed away, and Transport Tech was dissolved.  A friend in June of 2012 suggested Rob for a training position at Crawford Custom as an equipment maintenance manager and instructor.  Due to his heavy equipment knowledge, it was easy to transfer that same knowledge to cranes. And Robs experience instructing vocational school and working with the department of education working in Transport Tech lead the way as a current Crawford Custom instructor. Robs third role at CCC is inspecting cranes locally and out of state.

Outside of work, Rob is a commercial independent show operator (or thump junkie) for Zambelli and Pyrotecnico.

Fun fact: A thump junkie at a young age: Picture a little boy with his pop gun, but instead of using the gun he uses a hammer – it’s louder.  One of Rob’s former students he trained to drive trucks at vocational school asked him if he’d be interested in being an independent show operator with Zambelli. And so, in 2002, Rob ran his first firework show at Five-Town Recreation Park in Roscoe, Pa.

RYAN HOUGH

Instructor & Inspector

Ryan is fourth generation in the family business.  He started out as a custom sign fabricator for a company that also had a crane business as well.  Ryan washed trucks and swept floors at the age of 14, before moving into the custom sign fabrication department.  Along with working with art department to lay vinyl and build customer signs, Ryan also learned basic crane skills working alongside coworkers installing customer signs.

In 2006, Ryan started working with his dad, Billy, in the family business, Hough Logistic. In 2008 Ryan joined Crawford Custom as a crane inspector. Currently he works for both family businesses. At Hough Logistics, Ryan is a project manager for oversize moving and rigging. This job takes him to Canada all the way down to Mexico.

Two memorable jobs that Ryan experienced. First, the transport of transformers into the caves of the boundary dam in Washington State.

Fun fact: Boundary Dam is a concrete arch gravity-type hydroelectric dam, finished in 1967, on the Pend Oreille River, in the U.S. state of Washington. The dam is located in the northeast corner of Washington state, just south of the border with British Columbia, Canada.

Second most memorable job, his first rail car job was moving the largest in the U.S. gas turbine that had 20 axles from port of Charleston to Greenville S.C.

Fun Fact: A Schnabel car or Schnabel wagon is a specialized type of railroad freight car. It is designed to carry heavy and oversized loads in such a way that the load makes up part of the car. The load is suspended between the two ends of the cars by lifting arms; the lifting arms are connected to an assembly of span bolster that distribute the weight of the load and the lifting arm over many wheels.

When not working Ryan likes to spend his time hunting, skiing, snowboarding and tinkering with computer electronics.

ISRAEL (IZZY) MYERS

Instructor & Inspector

Israel was born in Meadville and is a proud Pennsylvania native. He attended West End Elementary school when he received the nickname “Izzy” and the name has since stuck. Izzy also remembers seeing a crane for the first time during the construction of his parents’ house, in the third grade.  Izzy graduated from M.A.S.H in 2011 and proceeded to earn a B.S. in Geology at Edinboro University in 2015.  After working various stints in oil and gas, mapping geotechnical and arbor industries.

Fun Fact: Geotechnical engineering, also known as geotechnics, is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. It uses the principles and methods of soil mechanics and rock mechanics for the solution of engineering problems and the design of engineering works.

In 2019 he began work with his cousin’s business learning everything he could about cranes.  Now Izzy is a proud and confident crane inspector and instructor.

On his off days, Izzy plays lead guitar in a band, golfs when the weather permits, enjoys traveling and using his camera to record it all.

Samantha Turberville

Graphic Designer

Samantha graduated from Butler County Community College in 1999 with an associate in Communication/Graphic Design. In 2000, she worked for the Southwest Butler YMCA (now called the Rose E. Schneider YMCA) as the capital campaign secretary. The campaign was to build a new facility that offered much more for their members.  Samantha had the privilege of meeting CEO’s and owners of business and corporations who contributed to the campaign. (which became great connections for a future business) Beings that this was a part-time position, and the campaign was put on hold due to property development issues, in 2001 Samantha was offered a vinyl graphics position at a friend’s business, Leonard Truck and Trailer.  The CEO wanted to start an in-house vinyl department for customers to have the opportunity to put graphics on their horse trailers. And since Samantha had vinyl experience from her externship in college, the job was extended to her.

Fun fact: Samantha has competed in AQHA for over 30 years and still competes. She currently rides western with her horse, Elvis. Because of showing horses, this is how she had her connection for her first graphic design job with Leonard Truck and Trailer and her second design job with the Butler Eagle Newspaper.

In 2002, Samantha went to work for The Butler Eagle newspaper as a graphic designer in the advertising department.  She worked for the Butler Eagle and its sister paper The Cranberry Eagle for a total of over 15 years. In between that time, Samantha worked as a graphic designer for Minuteman Press printing company, 422 Auto Auction, and US Investigation Services.  During her time working for these companies, Samantha became a print expert. With this knowledge she started moonlighting as a freelancer by offering design work to local companies with business cards, brochures, sales flyers, t-shirts etc. Clients inquired so much about the actual printing of the designs that she added the title of print broker to her freelancing arsenal. It became pretty busy with work, so she officially started a business, SLT Advertise by Design.

After a year or so, clients inquired on web designing and promotional products, so Samantha added these services to her business as well. After 8 years of freelancing and family obligations, Samantha closed the business in search of a full-time graphic design position.  And that is how she became the Crawford Custom Consulting graphic and web designer.

Outside of work, Samantha enjoys painting, drawing, crafts, fishing with her husband and son, hiking with her Great Dane and trying to change her brown thumb into a green one by spending time in the garden.

TJ SHINN

Lakewood COO

TJ began his career in the crane business at the young age of 16 working odd jobs for his father’s crane rental business, Cranex Inc.

In 2004, under the guidance of his father, Kenny Shinn, TJ started his own crane rental business, Shinn Cranes LLC. Then adding in 2007 training and testing with a partnership with his father bringing to life a new company, ACIS Cranex.  TJ specialized in hands-on practical exams and training.  Following the passing of his father, TJ decided to explore partnership with a proper suiter, given that his father wasn’t here to assist with the company.  He leaned on a blossoming relationship with Brian and Billy Hough of Crawford Custom Consulting.  It was decided in the best interest of both companies to join forces.

TJ is a 5th generation owner and operator in the crane business. His great-great-grandfather founded and was the president of the Operator Engineers Local 825. The Shinn Family name is most memorable from the parent company United Crane and Shovel Service that was established in 1937 and it was the largest crane company on the Eastern seaboard in the United States in its hay day. TJ is a direct descendent of the family tree.

TJ has always had a motto: To have each candidate feel more confident, competent and qualified as an operator from the time they came in to the time they leave.

Fun Fact: TJ is a lead singer in a cover band, Lights Out and is a football commissioner for the local Pop Warner Youth Football chapter. When TJ isn’t working, you’ll find him putting around the golf course.
